Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's) are the parts of fats which are essential for health, and can only be obtained through the diet, they can not be created within the body from other nutrients we eat. EFA's are found in high levels in oily fish, nuts and seeds. These essentail fatty acids are often referred to as omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids.
Supplementing the diet with EFA's ensures the body is provided with enough of these raw materials to manufacture hormones and build new cells within the body. EFA's differ from other fats we eat in that they can be used for biological processes as well as energy, whereas other fats are biologically inert and can only be used as energy or to be stored as body fat.
